Beat the Heat!

As the summer season approaches, parents can expect their children to want to explore the outdoors and go play in parks. But too much exposure to extreme heat can cause children to become sick in more ways than you think. Extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat strokes. It is important to limit the amount of time your child spends outside during the hottest hours of the day (usually between 12pm and 3pm) and to be equipped with the right protection to safely enjoy the summer season.

Check out these 3 simple tips to help you beat the heat this summer!

  1. Check the weather- Before you head out for the day, check the weather forecast for any alerts that may require you to take extra precautions. Reschedule or find alternative activities if outdoor plans occur during the hottest parts of the day.

  2. Stay Hydrated- Water is your child’s best friend. Encourage your child to drink water regularly, even before he/she asks for it. Add some flavor by putting fruits like berries and cucumbers in their water bottles for a refreshing and tasty beverage.

  3. Keep Cool- Dress your child in loose-fitting and light-colored clothing. Take breaks from the outdoors in an air-conditioned place like a library or a museum.
