Girl Scouts Volunteer At GBCA Head Start of Paterson

PATERSON, NJ -- In an effort to earn their silver award, Girl Scout Troop #60568 of Saddle Brook has chosen to volunteer at GBCA’s Head Start program in Paterson. The silver award is the highest award a cadet can receive and must be earned by doing a community service project. There are nine girls in the troop and they are working on various projects for the children and staff in the Head Start program.

Jennifer T. recorded 26 children’s books on CDs so that the children will be able to listen to the stories in the classroom. Some of the books included were Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle, My New Friend Is So Fun by Mo Willems, and Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.

Emily R. created a positivity jar by filling a mason jar with 100 uplifting quotes from famous people. Each day, a quote will be selected out of the jar and posted in the school office for staff members to see. An example of one of the positivity jar quotes is “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction” by JFK.

The other girls in the troop are creating coloring books and gathering school supplies for the pre-school children. The troop plans to have these two projects completed in early September.

Greater Bergen’s Head Start program provides free early childhood education and family services to low-income families in Bergen County, Jersey City and Paterson, NJ. Comprehensive services and resources prepare children for kindergarten, enhance their emotional and physical well-being, and foster stable family relationships.
